I've seen a couple of the "Register for the draft, It's the law" commercials on TV lately. Then I read in the current issue of The American Legion magazine a whole four page article about the selective service. Coincedence or conspiracy?
First soften them up with a few reminders that we still have a selective service. Next get the old veterans telling how good the draft was and how the service made them real men. Soon we should see a popular public figure calling for a draft. Then we will start hearing the media doing stories on the need for more enlistments. It wont be long after that, Washington will fire it up.

I think that the draft might be a good thing for this country.
So a couple of things here.
If you are old enough you should remember the phrase:
Join the Army or Go To Jail.
This was a real option when I was confronted with the decision.
And this is the most important thing. If we had the draft we wouldn't have
the problems we have Gangs and Crime.
Being drafted meant that you would acquire the skills of living in our society.
The service doesn't let you get away with disrespect or undisciplined ways.
(you might spend time in the brig if you don't.)
If you want to be in a gang then the service is the biggest gang around,
complete with weapons tanks, bombs, blood, guts, gore and death.
So why wouldn't an inner city gang banger want a place like this,
complete with food, clothing, medical & dental, housing, and a chance to blow some ones brains out.
(The brains of the enemy not your comrades in arms.)
So you can see why the DRAFT would be a good thing for the troubled youth of this country.
The service was looked on by the young men in this country as a writ of passage into manhood. (so to speak)
So these are just few of among many of the reasons for the draft.
I'm sure that you could think of some more.
In the meantime:

The service was looked on by the young men in this country as a writ of passage into manhood. (so to speak) Yes, maybe before Vietnam, but since Vietnam, warfare and "serving their country" has been viewed quite differently.
So these are just few of among many of the reasons for the draft.

Darabe, this post seems out of character for you??? Did you run out of onions?
I joined the military of my own accord and the last thing I would have wanted was a bunch of individulas working and fighting next to me that were forced into the military.
Personally, I think stopping this fucking savage, illegal and costly war is what we really need in the U.S., not a draft to continually feed the war machine and the military industrial complex.

You must be to young to remember the fifties and even the early sixties, things were a lot different then,
the draft was an option for a lot of guys to get away form a bad situation.
What would you want? Go to prison or go to war. Rot in a cell or get shot and wounded with honor.
Well the choice seem pretty plain to me.
Oh and nine seconds was my life expectancy in what I was doing in the Vietnam war.

Enlisting is an option. The draft is an imposition, choice is removed.
Good buy and gobble less.

Exactly.
BTW, even though I was naive at the time, I enlisted to fight for freedom and liberty. The involuntary draft is neither a part of freedom or liberty, except possibly when dealing with extreme measures (e.g.: a nation being invaded).

I can understand where you are coming from Darabe, but this is ultimately an "appeal to tradition" and an "argumentum ad antiquitatem". Maybe you are too old to realize that the service is still an "option" for a lot of guys (and women now) to get away from a bad situation, but that the option is voluntary. Maybe you are also too old to realize that the U.S. military is now extremely advanced compared to the military of the fifties through the seventies. Forcing a recruit through eight weeks of boot camp and handing him/her a rifle is a thing of the past, even for the infantry. Just during my time in the service I went through 14 weeks of advance boot camp and at least a dozen specialized schools and training and that was still over 20 years ago.
BTW, the military IMO should not be a rehabilitation center for delinquents and criminals. The last individuals that need to be around violence and weapons are delinquents and criminals. It is bad enough that so many delinquents and criminals filter throught the military system as it is.
Unfortunately, the military itself is presently a needed evil. With that said, it would make the most rational and reasonable sense to have as many intelligent, rational, sensible, logical, and empathetic individuals in the military as possible.
